MCSA Amajuba section

The Amajuba Section of the Mountain Club of South Africa (MCSA), founded in 1983, is based in Newcastle, Kwa-Zulu Natal and actively fosters and facilitates mountaineering, climbing, trekking, mountain walking and related activities, as well as conservation of mountain areas and promoting fellowship between people with these interests.

Rating System
  1. Family weekend. Children, prospective and older members. Easy, short hikes often-good facilities.
  2. Easy hike. Footpaths present or otherwise flat open terrain.
  3. Average difficulty. Path over varying terrain, often steep. Sometimes paths, route finding necessary.
  4. Difficult hike without footpath. Might incl. bundu bashing, serious scrambling, kloofing or exposure.
  5. Technical climb. Requires climbing gear (sometimes ice climbing gear).

Join us

The Amajuba section of the MCSA invites all mountain enthusiasts in the catchment area for the section to join us. our members live in Newcastle (where we have a club-house), Dundee, Vryheid, Ladysmith, Volksrust, Ingogo and surrounding areas. We organise at least one weekend and one day outing per month and meet regularly at our club-house in Newcastle.

To apply for membership please complete the Membership Application Form and return to the Membership Secretary (or other committee member) at a social, or post to P O Box 1362, Newcastle 2940.

Fitness level
On some of the more extreme hikes, you will need to be reasonably fit; you should however be able to participate in most of the hikes we do.
Non-members' participation
Non-members are welcome; you will be asked to pay a meet-fee. Participation is however at the discretion of the meet leader, who may occasionally, for safety reasons, refuse non-members' participation, unless the non-member is invited by or known to one of the participants in such outings.
Membership fees
MCSA Amajuba section's family membership fees are R125 per year. There are other categories of membership fees, including individual, country member, etc. Students, scholars and pensioners pay a reduced fee. Please contact the Membership secretary for details.
Benefits of joining
As a member you will benefit from shared resources, the experience and knowledge that our leaders bring, access to restricted mountain areas, an organisation that boasts more than 100 years of experience, affiliation to the UIAA and reciprocal rights with other Mountain clubs around the world, where you may benefit from reduced rates when using their facilities.

The MCSA was founded in 1891. The Club consists of a network of fourteen geographically located sections - Amajuba was founded in 1983 by a group of local mountain enthusiasts and became the 13th section of the MCSA in November 1984.
